LOCAL PROFILE: Etowah Indian Mounds Historic Site

CANTON, Ga. – Take a family trip and participate in a remote history lesson at the same time. Visit the Etowah Indian Mounds in Cartersville to see the last standing artifacts from the Mississippian Native Americans. This group inhabited the area from 1000-1550.

According to Georgia State Parks, only about nine percent of this site has been excavated and examination of the surrounding artifacts revealed that the Etowah Indians were a society that was rich in ritual and habit.

Historians think, one of the mounds excavated was used as a “platform” for the home of the priest-chief. Seemingly, the priest-chief needed to live on a higher elevation than his tribe to “monitor” his people. Another excavated mound was a tomb for a nobleman in the tribe.

Visitors are able to tour the museum, the ruins and listen to docents as they share their interpretation of what the community once was.

Woodstock Welcomes You!

“Woodstock Welcomes You!” is a weekly article about a local business in Woodstock and this week we’re  speaking with Gemma Beylouny, owner of Narra Maids, a Woodstock residential and commercial cleaning service since 1997.

“I started with one house and then came another and another and next thing I knew, I had more houses than I could take care of myself,” said Gemma. “So I had to start hiring people to work for me. I now have a staff of five and we’re continually seeking qualified employees that are willing to undergo background and drug screening.”

Gemma went on to say, “We’re not a giant franchise company, we’re a locally owned and operated business, bonded and insured, which is important to any home owner or business. The thing that sets us apart from other cleaning services is that we make sure we go that extra mile to please our clients.
