Cub Scouts build 'Boxcar Children' garden for local school

Cub Scouts build 'Boxcar Children' garden for local school

WOODSTOCK, Ga. -- For a while, the students at Little River Elementary School in Woodstock could only dream of getting the Boxcar Children-themed garden they wanted.

Cub Scout Pack 2010 turned that wish into reality.

The Cub Scouts and their parents donated their time, equipment and materials to the project for three weekends. Together, they created train tracks, garden beds and a "real" boxcar on the Little River campus.

As soon as the school receives soil, students will be able to fill their garden with carrots, onions and potatoes -- the same vegetables that the Boxcar Children cooked in their stew while they were living in the boxcar in the popular children's book series.

The Little River community is very grateful to Pack 2010 for all of the dedication and hard work that went into the project.

WOODSTOCK: Community remembers Dylan Kent

WOODSTOCK: Community remembers Dylan Kent

WOODSTOCK, Ga. -- Coaches and players with the Cherokee Youth Football Association are mourning the loss of one of their own.

Dylan James Kent, 16, passed away this morning after an eight-month battle with cancer. He was a freshman at Etowah High School in Woodstock.

"He was a great kid -- very coachable," said Jim McCarty, a coach with the CYFA, who worked with Dylan for two years. "He's going to be missed by the entire community."

In July 2010, Dylan was diagnosed with Burkitt's lymphoma, a rare non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. The cancer was aggressive, and Dylan spent the last several months of his life in the AFLAC Cancer Center at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta.

Dylan's parents took a good deal of time off work to be with him. They are now struggling to pay his funeral expenses.

A memorial fund has been set up through SunTrust Bank.
