Registration open for 2011 Georgia Games

KENNESAW, Ga. -- Amateur athletes of every age, ability and passion can compete for medals again this year at the 2011 Georgia Games.

This year's edition of the state's largest multi-sport event will take place on various weekends throughout the summer.

Online registration is currently open for all 48 sports, listed below.

More than 8,000 athletes from 500 Georgia cities and town competed in the 2010 Games. The event is staffed by over 1,000 volunteers, who can also register online to help.

The Georgia Games is a festival for state citizens of all ages and athletic abilities, including physically disabled and Paralympic athletes.

MARIETTA, GA -- After an especially wild winter, Rita's Italian Ice is ready to celebrate spring.

On Sunday, Mar. 20, Rita's will hold its 19th annual First Day of Spring Giveaway. Customers who visit participating stores from 12:00 noon to 9:00 p.m. will receive a free 10 oz. cup of Italian ice.

The First Day of Spring Giveaway is always a huge success.

WOODSTOCK, GA -- Georgia Governor Nathan Deal recently signed the Youth Art Month Proclamation, and two students from Woodstock Elementary School were lucky enough to witness the event.

Fifth grader Emma Ramirez and first grader Tracy Muhia accompanied their art teacher, Pam Morgan, to the Georgia State Capitol to meet Governor Deal and celebrate the signing.

Local Veteran 'Ambushed' with Honor Ceremony

WOODSTOCK, GA -- A Woodstock veteran was honored in a surprise ceremony on Saturday, Feb. 19 at the Woodstock Community Center.

Members of the Warriors' Watch Riders, in conjunction with the Woodstock Department of the Marine Corps League and the City of Woodstock, came together to show their love and gratitude for Marine Corps vet John Newport.

Newport is Commandant of the Woodstock Department of the Marine Corps League. He was the target of a monthlong ambush plan that included his family and friends, members of the Woodstock American Legion Post and Representative Tom Price.

"John is a natural born leader and an asset to this community," said Bud Leonard, Woodstock City Council member and retired Army First Sergeant.

Special Education Agency Information Fair Coming in March

WOODSTOCK, GA -- The Cherokee County School District's Office of Special Education is gearing up for its annual Agency Information Fair.

This year's event will be held on Wednesday, Mar. 9 from 2:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Cherokee Recreation and Parks Authority (7545 Main Street, Building 20, Woodstock, 30188).

The fair is open to families of special education students of all ages, from preschool to high school.

The following winners will represent the county in the Northwest Georgia Regional Science and Engineering Fair on Saturday, Feb.

'Life is a Dream' at UWG

'Life is a Dream' at UWG

CARROLLTON, GA -- The West Georgia Theatre Company presents a remarkable night of entertainment with Life is a Dream: An Evening of Ten-Minute Plays.

The show will run in the Townsend Center for the Performing Arts' Dangle Theatre from Tuesday, Feb. 15 to Saturday, Feb. 19 at 7:30 p.m. There will also be 2:30 p.m. matinee performances on Feb. 19 and Sunday, Feb. 20.

Life is a Dream follows the company's bi-annual tradition of producing an assortment of ten-minute plays written by University of West Georgia students and bringing them to life in the black box theater.

The original Life is a Dream, written by Pedro Calderon de la Barca, has inspired all eight of the short plays.
