Light it Right in the Night

Light it Right in the Night

A little rain could not damper the glow of the night on Tuesday, December 20th.  Approximately 150 community members braved the rainy, gloomy skies and gathered in the Downtown Woodstock City Park to celebrate freedom, in particular religious freedom.

4th Annual Chanukah Celebration & Grand Menorah Lighting

4th Annual Chanukah Celebration & Grand Menorah Lighting

Chanukah -The Festival of Lights- for many of us brings back fond memories of childhood years and serves to renew our sense of identity. The Chanukah lights provide us with warmth, joy, strength and inspiration. Such is the purpose of a community-wide celebration to be held at the Downtown Woodstock Park this Chanukah.  The universal message that ultimately good will prevail over evil, freedom over oppression and light over darkness shines at this special holiday time.

The Chabad Jewish Center along with Jewish business leaders invites the entire community to celebrate the Festival of Lights at the 4th annual public Menorah lighting ceremony. The grand Chanukah celebration will begin at 6:00 pm on Tuesday, December 20, in the Downtown Woodstock Park with the lighting of the ten-foot menorah followed by music and delicious, hot latkes.

CURE Childhood Cancer and Copeland’s Restaurants Team Up for a 'Full Filling' Cause

More than 40,000 infants, children and teenagers are currently receiving treatment for cancer. CURE Childhood Cancer is a non-profit organization dedicated to funding childhood cancer research projects conducted by experts locally and nationally who are working to find a cure.

Open Arms, one of CURE’s key programs, includes weekly meals delivered to the families and children in both Egleston and Scottish Rite campuses of the Aflac Cancer Center at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. These meals help bring a sense of home and comfort to the hospital, and this is where Copeland’s of New Orleans has stepped in.

Starting with their specialty, Thanksgiving, Copeland’s is donating a Thanksgiving lunch buffet for these families that look forward to their CURE meal every week.

State tax credit program raises $50M for scholarships

State tax credit program raises $50M for scholarships

ATLANTA -- The Georgia Department of Revenue stamped its approval on $50 million in donations under the Georgia Scholarship Tax Credit Program.

The program lets people and businesses get tax credit for donations to scholarships for Georgia children to attend private schools.

Fifty million dollars is the most allowed under the program. In 2012, the statewide cap on donations will increase by the annual increase in the Consumer Price Index until 2018.

Individuals can donate up to $1,000, while married couples have a donation cap of $2,500. Corporations can donate up to 75 percent of their state income tax liability.

The American Federation for Children estimated more than 6,000 students last year got scholarships to attend private schools through the program.
