Cherokee seniors to be honored at bowl game

CHEROKEE COUNTY, Ga. -- Northside Hospital - Cherokee will sponsor a bowl game for seniors in the Cherokee County School District later this year.

The Northside Hospital - Cherokee CCSD Senior Bowl will be held Friday, Dec. 5 at 7 p.m. in the Etowah High School stadium. It is the first football game of its kind to be held in Cherokee County.

Senior football players, cheerleaders, marching band members and JROTC cadets will be honored during the game. The players will also receive commemorative jerseys, while the cheerleaders, band members and cadets will get medals.

"We're about giving our students opportunities to succeed and celebrating the achievements," Cherokee County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Frank Petruzielo said in a statement. "This wonderful event does both."

Tickets for the bowl game are only $5. The admission fee will be waived for anyone who brings a new, unwrapped toy for the school district's holiday toy drive.

Woodstock HS hires interim basketball coach

WOODSTOCK, Ga. -- Darrin Clark has been named interm head coach for Woodstock High School's boys basketball program.

Clark will coach during the 2014-15 season. He replaces Brady Richeson, who recently resigned.

Clark began his 14-year coaching career at Woodland High School in Bartow County, where he led his team to two state playoff appearances and one Sweet Sixteen. He has been Woodstock High's JV and assistant varsity basketball coach over the past three years.

(WXIA) -- Monday night was the regional semifinals for high school basketball.

Walton vs. Milton
Last time Walton played Milton, Milton won by 14 points. Tonight, the Eagles and Raiders were back at it.

Zach Hoskins on the break for Milton, knocks it down for three. While Walton's Nik Wells goes up for three - no good. But Blake Poole is there to clean it up.

Walton upsets Milton 67-66, so the Raiders advance to the region championship to take on the winner of the next game.

Wheeler vs. Etowah
Wheeler and the host Etowah -- Wheeler on the fast break, with Jaylen Brown to Elijah Staley, and the Mississippi State commit slams it home!

Etowah hung around, with Trevor Head underneath the basket for two. But Wheeler responded quickly with senior guard Avery Patterson going up for the tree!

Wheeler remained undefeated after downing Etowah 76-74.

56 Cherokee students earn National Signing Day scholarships

CHEROKEE COUNTY, Ga. -- Nearly 60 seniors at Cherokee County's six public high schools accepted sports scholarships on National Signing Day.

The scholar-athletes were recognized Wednesday during a special brunch at the Northside Hospital-Cherokee Conference Center in Canton.

Highlights from the event included twin brothers Austin and Avery Smith signing baseball scholarships for the same college, and the awarding of the county's very first bowling scholarship.

ATLANTA -- The latest edition of the USA Today Metro Atlanta Super 25 High School Football Poll is here.

There are two new faces that join this week's list. Both teams are unbeaten, but there is still no change at the top.

The North Gwinnett Bulldogs still lead the way as they head for a region showdown with Mill Creek. Buford is next, with Carrollton, Lovejoy, and Eagle's Landing Christian making up the top 5.

Sandy Creek is 6 this week, with Norcross, McEachern, Lovett and Gainesville rounding out the top 10.

Collins Hill moves up from 20 to 14 after beating Peachtree Ridge. Stephenson rises from 22 to 15 and will face region rival Tucker this week. St. Pius climbs from 21 to 16.

Milton drops from 12 to 18 this week and North Cobb slides from 16 to 21.

New faces this week are Etowah at 17, Calhoun returning to the poll at 24 and Creekside appearing for the first time this season at 25.

High school coaches to participate in rib-eating contest

MARIETTA, Ga. -- Texas Roadhouse is kicking off a 10-day series of special events with a rib-eating contest for local high school coaches.

On Monday, Oct. 7, coaches from Cherokee, Harrison, Kell, Kennesaw Mountain, North Cobb, Pope and Sprayberry high schools will compete to see who can eat the most ribs.

The winning coach will receive 10 percent of the evening's proceeds for his football team.

The Battle of the Coaches contest will begin at 7:30 p.m. It will be preceded by an applesauce-eating contest for children at 6:30 p.m.
