Sketch released of suspect in attempted child abduction

CHEROKEE COUNTY, Ga. -- Authorities have released the sketch of a man they say tried to abduct a 12-year-old boy walking to his bus stop Tuesday morning.

Corporal Darin Downey with the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office says it happened along Deer Hollow Drive.

The boy had walked back to his house to pick up a few items he forgot and was approached while returning to the bus stop.  At the time, Downey says the boy was distracted, trying to untangle his headphones.

“He asked the child do you need some help with the headphones why don’t you get in the vehicle and I’ll help you.  Luckily the juvenile was smart enough not to engage in conversation with him and he asked him a second time to get inside the vehicle and the child took off running,” Downey explained.

The boy was not hurt and deputies say he did the right thing.  His mother says she had talked with him before about what to do if a stranger approached.

“We encourage all children, never stop and talk to strangers.  Never engage in conversation.  Anytime you are approached by someone you don’t know, especially in a vehicle always run and seek help,” added Downey.

"He's pretty responsible and this bus stop is within my eyes' distance of our home," said Casey Wilson, the boy's mother. "You'd think that's safe, but apparently it's not."

The Cherokee County School District sent out an alert to parents in the area, warning them to keep a close eye on their children.  But some parents complain the alert didn’t come out until after their kids had arrived home.

Casey Wilson said she is proud hf her son -- but now, she doesn't want to take any chances with him going to school.

"So either I will be at the bus stop, or I'll be taking him to school," she said.

The sheriff’s office says it’s working on a sketch of the suspect.  He’s described as a white man in his late 40’s, with grey hair and a buzz cut.  The boy says he also had a tattoo that wrapped around his left arm above his elbow.

The vehicle is described as a two door white SUV, with a red paint stain, dirt or rust along the bottom of the driver's side door.  It may be a Mercury Mountaineer or Ford Explorer, with black rims and slightly tinted windows.
