WOODSTOCK, Ga. -- The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been called in to help investigate after an officer-involved shooting in Woodstock, Ga.

The shooting happened on Wednesday around 2 a.m. and Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office authorities requested GBI assistance just after 3 a.m.

Police said they were initially called in to investigate a possible suicide threat to the 1400 block of Olde Mill Trace. Officers then learned that there was a woman and two young children in the home with an armed man – later identified as William Candler, 35, of Woodstock.

As officers arrived the woman and children safely fled the home.

But as Woodstock police officers approached the residence to make contact with Candler, he exited the home onto the front porch carrying a rifle.

Officers commanded that the drop the weapon. Instead, police said Candler raised the rifle at officers who then fired at him.

No officers were injured and the Candler is currently receiving treatment at Kennestone Hospital and faces two counts of aggravated assault.
