J. Christopher's adopts 16 families for the holidays

(WXIA) -- J. Christopher's announced Monday it has "adopted" 16 families to give them the holiday of their dreams.

Every year, the restaurant chain helps the communities it serves by providing families in need with household goods, toys, books and school supplies. Customers have the option of giving gifts and donations to the cause.

This season's Adopt-a-Family campaign began Friday, Nov. 21. Participating locations and the schools their adopted families' children attend include:

(WXIA) -- Sunday, Aug. 24 is National Waffle Day, and all J. Christopher's locations will throw a weeklong celebration to recognize the holiday.

From Aug. 25-29, J. Christopher's customers can order their choice of Red White & Blue, Belgian, Cinnamon Pecan, Bacon or Strawberry waffles for only $5.

Mellow Mushroom to celebrate 40th anniversary with 1974 prices

ATLANTA -- Mellow Mushroom is celebrating its 40th birthday Wednesday by offering some items on its menu at 1974 prices.

The restaurant, which was founded in Atlanta by Georgia Tech students, says on its Facebook page that it is celebrating with a Way Out Wednesday Party.

As part of the celebration, one customer will win a trip to Amsterdam.

Special pricing is offered on these items:

  • Small cheese pizza: $2.50
  • Bud Light: 75 cents
  • Michelob: 75 cents
  • PBR: 75 cents
  • Coca-Cola products: 30 cents

The restaurant chain says prices are for one day only. The small cheese pizza offer has a limit of one per guest, dine-in only, with additional ingredients at current menu price.

Chick-fil-A makes 5,900 meals for kids who receive free, reduced school lunch

(ATLANTA BUSINESS CHRONICLE) -- The owners of 60 metro Atlanta Chick-fil-A restaurants provided 5,900 lunches Wednesday to children in seven counties who typically receive free and reduced lunches at school, reports Marietta Daily Journal.

The food made its way to children through MUST Ministries, whose summer lunch program has been around for 19 years. Program volunteers meet at churches in Bartow, Cherokee, Cobb, Forsyth, Gwinnett, north Fulton, Paulding and Pickens counties five days a week to make, pack and deliver lunches to nearly 6,000 children across eight counties for 10 weeks during the summer.

Mellow Mushroom launches spicy Up in Smoke menu

(WXIA) -- Mellow Mushroom is celebrating summer with a "hot" new menu. The Up in Smoke offerings are inspired by the spicy flavors of chipotle and poblano peppers.

The pizza chain's restaurants will serve Up in Smoke items through Sunday, July 27.

The menu includes a vegetarian tortilla soup, the Holy Mole Hoagie (a sandwich featuring chicken, poblano peppers and Mexican mole sauce), a shrimp calzone and salad, and Mel's Fattie, which is a giant flour tortilla filled with chicken, cheese and caramelized onions.

Mellow Mushroom's Up in Smoke featured pizza is the Fully Blazed Chicken Mole Pie, which has a mole sauce base and is topped with grilled chicken, caramelized onions, the chain's signature mushroom trio, and mozzarella and feta cheeses.

There is also a dessert offering -- the Psychadelic Cookie Sundae, which is a giant cookie served with vanilla ice cream, chocolate syrup and whipped cream.

(WXIA) -- In July of 1958, the very first International House of Pancakes opened in Toluca Lake, Calif. Today, IHOP has 1,627 restaurants in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and several countries across the globe.

To celebrate its 56th anniversary, the chain will offer its signature buttermilk pancakes for less than they cost in the 1950s.

On Tuesday, July 8 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., IHOP customers can purchase a short stack for only 56¢. The pancakes cost 60¢ when the flagship restaurant opened.

IHOP claims it serves more than 700 million pancakes every year. Only one other flavor -- chocolate chip -- has been on its menu since 1958.

Panera swears off artificial ingredients

NEW YORK -- Panera says it will remove artificial colors, flavors, sweeteners and preservatives from its food by 2016, a reflection of the growing distaste people are showing for such ingredients.

The chain of bakery cafes, which has about 1,800 U.S. locations, is making the pledge as part of a "Food Policy" it is unveiling Tuesday that outlines its commitment to "clean" and "simple" ingredients.

The announcement comes at a time when Panera Bread Co. is facing slowing sales growth and working to jumpstart its business.

It also underscores how positioning foods as natural has become a marketing advantage, regardless of whether it brings any nutritional benefits.
