Math in the Real World | Schools
Title (Max 100 Charaters)
Carmel Elementary School students got cooking! While studying the multiplication and of fractions and mixed numbers, Ms. Kuykendall's 5th grade class was given a recipe containing numerous fractions and asked "What would you do if you had to multiply the original recipe in order to make more servings?" The students enjoyed the class work so much, they asked if they could actually find a recipe, multiply the amounts in order to feed the entire class, and bring it into school to share. Rarely do students ask for extra work, so Ms. Kuykendall jumped at the opportunity for the students to make connection between the math standards and the real world. Students were offered the chance to receive extra credit if they wrote out the recipe, showed the calculation to increase the amounts, and produced the product themselves (with adult supervision, of course.) This project was a great success!
