WOODSTOCK, Ga. -- A Woodstock High School senior is one of only 2,500 students nationwide to win a highly competitive National Merit Scholarship.
Sam Mixon plans to use the $2,500 gift to study computer science in college. He earned the highest SAT score both at his school and among all the seniors in Cherokee County's public high schools.
National Merit Scholars are chosen from among 16,000 semi-finalists who earn very high scores on the PSAT. Those students are whittled down to 15,000 finalists. Eight thousand recipients of various National Merit-related scholarships are selected from the finalists.
To earn the scholarship, Sam had to submit his high school academic transcript, an essay, proof of community involvement and a letter of recommendation.
