Pike Nurseries to host Gardenfest

(WXIA) -- Now that fall is almost here, it's time to start thinking about seasonal gardening.

On Thursday, Sept. 26, all Pike Nurseries locations will hold a free Gardenfest event to prepare customers for the change in seasons.

Gardenfest festivities will include discounts on merchandise throughout the store, as well as free appetizers and wine samplings. Five percent of the event's proceeds will be donated to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta.

The event will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Kohl's hiring 50,000 for holidays

(WXIA) -- Kohl's plans to hire about 50,000 seasonal associates nationwide this year.

The department store chain announced Thursday that it hopes to find about 40 employees for each of its 1,158 stores, plus 6,400 people to work in distribution centers and 350 workers in credit operations.

Seasonal Kohl's employees can work up to 20 hours per week. Typical duties include unloading trucks, processing freight, stocking the store and running a cash register.

Kohl's said it will begin hiring for the holidays this month and hopes to fill all its seasonal positions by mid-November.

Woodstock ES receives grant from Target

WOODSTOCK, Ga. -- Woodstock Elementary School has received a big grant from Target.

The company gave $793.62 to the school to spend on technology resources.

"The students at Woodstock Elementary School are fortunate to have two computer lab teachers to integrate technology and state educational standards," principal Kim Montalbano said.

Montalbano added the school will use the money to buy a schoolwide license to More.Starfall, a program that uses games to teach math and reading skills.

Sad day for Atlanta couponers: The end of Kroger double coupons

ATLANTA -- The wave of couponers' cries heard in the Midwest and Texas has finally hit the Southeast!

For years, we have enjoyed the everyday doubling of coupons $0.50 and less. We got FREE items because of this great policy and it made handling an almost impossible budget easier for us couponers and savvy shoppers.

While I am not saying that this will hurt us (I will be posting some other things Kroger is doing), it does have me wondering -- in this competitive Atlanta market, where we use more coupons per capita then ANYWHERE in the US -- how will this fare? Will Publix jump on the bandwagon?

The end of double coupons becomes effective September 21, 2013. For this couponer, I will be having to double check my shopping list with this new rule. It's not fun, but a lot of new things are coming from Kroger, and I think this is why the program of double couponing is ending.

WOODSTOCK, Ga. -- Young adult author phenoms Wendy Higgins and Jennifer Armentrout will appear at FoxTale Book Shoppe on Saturday, July 20th at 1 p.m.  FoxTale Book Shoppe is located in Downtown Woodstock at 105 East Main Street.  At this free event, you will be able to meet the authors, ask questions, take pictures, and get books signed.

Wendy Higgins is the author of SWEET EVIL and SWEET PERIL; Armentrout is hugely popular for her LUX and COVENANT novels, plus her newest release, CURSED.  FoxTale has them all.  One can come to the event and get your purchased books signed, or buy signed copies via FoxTale's website and have them mailed to you (US only). This will be a great event for young adults, aspiring writers and YA authors. The books are generally suited for high school age and above.

The Outlet Shoppes at Atlanta to open next week

WOODSTOCK, Ga. -- Metro Atlanta's newest outlet mall will hold its grand opening on Thursday, July 18.

A ribbon cutting for the Outlet Shoppes at Atlanta will begin at 10 a.m.

The new shopping center will be home to a number of high-end retailers, including Brooks Brothers, Cole Haan, Tommy Hilfiger, Waterford Crystal and Saks Fifth Avenue OFF 5TH. It is located at 15 Ridge Walk Parkway.
