RaceTrac hiring for Free Coffee Week

ATLANTA -- RaceTrac is hiring more than 100 temporary employees for the holidays.

The Cobb County-based chain of gas stations will hire two extra people at 66 Georgia locations to help promote Free Coffee Week.

Employees will hold signs from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. on Dec. 17-21. Sign holders must be at least 18 years old and clean cut.

Public relations firm Hope Beckham will also hold a RaceTrac job fair from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 13 at its office at 17 Executive Park Drive in North Druid Hills.

Pike Nurseries to host gardening classes, sale

ATLANTA -- Fall, the prime planting season, is right around the corner, and Pike Nurseries has everything homeowners need to beautify their yards.

On Saturday, Sept. 15, all Pike locations in metro Atlanta will host a free fall gardening class. Nursery experts will take attendees through the process of picking out fall plants and caring for them.

The class will be held from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. and is free to attend.

Pike's Gardenfest event, where customers can enjoy complimentary refreshments while surveying a variety of plants and yard decorations, will be held on Thursday, Sept. 27 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Much of the merchandise will be on sale during Gardenfest.

Woman wins $50K lottery prize

WOODSTOCK, Ga. -- Woodstock resident Cheryl Bullard has multiple reasons to celebrate.

In addition to her recent birthday, Bullard found out that she won a $50,079 jackpot prize by matching all five winning numbers in the July 17 Georgia Lottery Fantasy 5 drawing.

She discovered she'd won when she checked the results on the Georgia Lottery's website.

"I had to look twice," she said. "I am elated."

Bullard, 58, works as a self-employed consultant. She bought her winning ticket at Trip Stop on Bells Ferry Road in Woodstock and claimed her money at the Georgia Lottery District Office in Dalton.

"I want to go out to dinner, go on a small shopping spree and put the rest toward savings," she said when asked how she plans to spend the prize.

Winning numbers from the July 17 Fantasy 5 drawing were 2-9-13-17-24.

ATLANTA -- The Walmart layaway program will return just in time for Christmas, the company announced Monday.

This year's layaway will have plenty of new features, including more eligible items and a $15 Walmart gift card for those who pay for their entire layaway purchase.

Layaway begins on Sept. 16. Customers who like their local Walmart stores on Facebook beginning Aug. 28 will be able to start their layaway early, on Sept. 14.

ATLANTA (AP) - Georgia is offering parents a tax holiday on back-to-school goods for the first time since 2009.

The state will temporarily suspend its collection of the sales tax on Aug. 10-11 for general school supplies, some clothing and computers and computer accessories.

Weekend showcase geared toward seniors

Weekend showcase geared toward seniors

WOODSTOCK, Ga. -- The Cherokee County Recreation Center will host an extravaganza for local seniors this weekend.

Everyone is invited to come down to the center for a showcase of products and services, including health screenings, a fashion show, demonstrations, entertainment and food. Admission is free and includes all-day bingo and door prize drawings.

The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 5. It is sponsored by Cherokee Seniors and Law Enforcement Together (S.A.L.T.).
